Where no man has gone before...

Authors note: I did this piece because I'v been lacking in creative writing. I didn't add a proper conclusion but I intend to continue this story. it will give me something to write about when I have a block. And yes, the title is a Star Trek reference which I happen to be watching right now

As Alan Anders approached  the shipyard, he stared in awe at the giant of a ship called Sovereign, the newest, most advanced and, most likely, largest ship built by the human race so far. Sovereign was a fitting name for a ship of its stature, if it worked. That was why Anders was there, to test the prototype of the new Destiny class starship. Alan was a well decorated USN captain and had seen his share of strange things in this galaxy, but why had he been assigned to this task? There were plenty other people who were more suitable and probably more willing to fly this thing than he was. It didn't matter, he was stuck here now and there was nothing he could do about it. Alan's real worry was the new vortex drive. Vortex tech wasn't anything new, but it's been known to cause problems if not correctly stabilized and not constantly monitored, and by problems, they meant a black hole tearing your ship into oblivion. Regular vortex travel was dangerous enough, and Anders didn't like the idea of a totally new way to turn a two million dollar spacecraft into space debris, and the Sovereign was a very nice and much more expensive craft. There were other things to worry about, but they were nothing compared to a vortex malfunction. All in all it was a fine craft, and Alan would be proud to command it, but he wasn't sure it was worth dying for just yet, but he had six days to think about it. Six days later Anders got into the commander's chair of the new vessel, completed only hours before, with the finest crew he could ask for. They must be confident in this ships performance to give him officers as valuable as them. This gave him a small comfort as the ships engines powered up and the atmospheric booster rockets lifted the ship off the ground and into the sky.
